Backyard Activity

This recording has a number of sounds. During my Soundwalk I came across a neighbor who was about to sweep her driveway on Lyndale Avenue in Minnneapolis MN around 3:00 in the afternoon. At the same time there were three kids jumping on a trampoline a couple houses away and a boy who was skateboarding nearby. The kids jumping on the trampoline are heard clearly in the beginning of this recording and become distant until the end. The skateboarding is heard in the start of the recording following the trampoline noises. Following the skateboarding the woman begins to sweep. The dog in the yard becomes noticeable at this point. He did not seem to like the broom and begins to bark at it. You can hear his claws on the pavement along with his growling. Towards the end it is apparent that he got a hold of the broom in his mouth. This recording is concluded with a plain flying above along with the sounds of the boys on the trampoline. 3/12/09 Listen here.

Creek And Drain

This recording shows two different sides of the Minnehaha creek at 7:00 PM. One is above on a bridge, and the other is in a drain. The reason for doing two postings at the same place was to show variation. This clip begins with birds flying overhead chirping. It proceeds with a little boy throwing rocks in the water and by accident hitting the side of the bridge. Following those noises, the same boy is recorded walking along the bridge with a stick brushing it up against the side railings to make that constant thumping noise. Half way through the recording I notice a black drain that was leaking water into the creek. I placed one microphone as far back as I could reach and heard the difference between the two different places. In the drain it was more of an echoing sound.3/12/09 Listen here.

Park

The recordings found here are the sounds of a park on Oakland at 4:00 PM. The beginning banging noises are those of a trash can lid being open and closed. The sliding sounds are those of a little boy going back and forth on a zip line. The sounds of kids playing are present throughout entire recording. Towards the end of the clip a plane is heard above followed by a truck driving nearby. There are also faint sounds of a basketball game being played in the background. This short recording gives credit towards the amount of activity happening at the same time in a specific place. 3/7/09

Walgreens Checkout

These noises were recorded in the Walgreens checkout on Brady Street. The women’s voice heard is the cashier and the following noises are register beeping, bags rumbling, coins clashing together, phones ringing and side conversations at 9:00 PM. I tried to capture more than one transaction at the register. Different noises seemed to come along with time. For instance, the phones ringing, and conversation between friends happened over a couple minutes while recording at the checkout. This recording captures a number of sounds going on at once which makes it an interesting recording.2/21/08 Check out the sounds here.

Minnehaha Creek

These sounds came from the first stop on my Soundwalk. They are a mixture of babbling water and side noises on a bridge above the Minnehaha Creek in Minneapolis MN around 7:30 PM. The noises in the background consists of birds chirping, a little girl and her father walking past, and sticks being thrown into the water. During this recording I switch the microphones from one side of the bridge to the other and I think it makes an enormous difference in the quality of sound of the babbling water.3/12/09 Listen here.

Drift Strategy

To begin my drift walk I decided to start on the corner of Brady and Prospect. I decided to start here because it could eventually lead me to a number of places. I decided it would be interesting to randomly pick the directions I would go in. I decided to do this with playing cards. I brought along two of each of these playing cards, one in red and one in black; Ace, two and a three. My strategy is to randomly pick a card and follow these instructions.
A black card = take a right
A red card = take a left.
Ace = 1 block
2= two blocks
3= three blocks
This strategy brought my to interesting places but I wasnt happy with my final sounds.
Check out my first starting point here
When I went back home to Minneapolis for the weekend I automatically knew where I wanted to go. The strategy behind my decision was to find the place with the most activity. I went on a random walk around my neigborhood on a very nice day and their was allot of activity outside. Here is my second starting point.
